SEN and EAL

Special Educational Needs and English as an Acquired Language

A pupil who may need such help is first assessed by a specialist teacher and any subsequent educational programmes deemed necessary are tailored to meet his/her specific needs.

Areas of specialist support include literacy, numeracy and English as an acquired language. Tuition is generally on a one-to-one basis or can be in pairs as they progress.

EAL (English as an Acquired Language) classes usually take place in small groups, as pupils are expected to already have a good enough grasp of the English language to be able to follow a lesson taught in English.

By employing a broad range of intervention strategies, the Special Needs department aims to provide the environment in which all pupils can fulfil their potential.

The function of the Special Needs department is to help individual pupils improve their essential skills, which in turn increases self esteem and motivation.
