Music at St Martin's Ampleforth
Music is taught as a curriculum subject in sets according to ability with appropriate work, expectations and assessments. In addition, Years 3 and 4 pupils are all allowed to choose a stringed instrument to learn free of charge.
The most able musicians (who usually play two instruments and are members of the Schola) can have their curriculum modified to make space for their needs. These children also have the opportunity to play in the Ampleforth College Music ensembles and to audition for the IAPS summer orchestra courses.
It is the fundamental policy of the music department that all children have access to creative and musical experiences appropriate to their age and ability. In addition to class lessons all have the opportunity, and are encouraged, to opt for additional one-to-one tuition in an instrument of their choice. Currently about 65% of the children have individual lessons in one instrument and about one quarter learn two instruments. All pupils are encouraged to participate in the musical life of the school in appropriate ways, and in particular to involve themselves in liturgical singing in the chapel.
