The Worsley Cup Cricket Tournament

8 June 2009

Despite the Arctic chill a memorable and full day of cricket was enjoyed by all the well wrapped up spectators watching a feast of attractive and highly competitive cricket.

As ever, teams from as far apart as Cumbria and Norfolk took part with games starting at 10am and the main final finishing at 6.30pm.

Gresham's School, from Norfolk, the pre-tournament favourites, eventually reached the final beating St. Martin's Ampleforth in a close and hard-fought semi-final. The other semi-final in the main competition was equally hard-fought and more dramatic with St. Olave's, York, beating Aysgarth on the last ball of the final over.

A similar close finish was witnessed in the plate final, between Terrington and Woodleigh, with both teams finishing with 43 runs scored, with Woodleigh, due to having lost less wickets, being victorious.

The main final proved to be something of a one-sided contest with St. Olave's, through dint of their tidy bowling and good ground fielding, proving too strong for Gresham's.

A special thank you to the umpires, who each year give their expertise and time very generously, and also to our groundsmen for preparing three top class wickets and out fields.
