Year 8 pilgrimage and sponsored walk to Osmotherley
7 June 2009
Friday 5th June 2009
Despite the appalling weather forecast, the day dawned dry and bright for the Year 8 sponsored walk and pilgrimage. The coach left school at 8.30am and, by 9.30am, all of Year 8 had begun their 6 mile sponsored walk in aid of Mary's Meals.
Starting at the Lady Chapel in Osmotherley, the route followed part of the Cleveland Way and took in breathtaking scenery varying from far-reaching views towards the Pennines, gorse- and heather-covered moorland and hillsides as well as a peaceful lake surrounded by pine trees. With a stop halfway for chocolates and cakes supplied by the accompanying ladies from the Mother's Prayer group, the children all managed the walk with ease.
Returning to the Lady Chapel the party just managed to squeeze in to this ancient place of worship and celebrated Mass, singing hymns to a guitar played by Mrs McFectrich and supplying their own bidding prayers. Father John was aided at Mass by two Franciscan Friars from Salford, who had bravely agreed to accompany the children on the walk. It was a very fitting and memorable occasion to finish exam week with.
Just as the Mass was finishing the heavens opened and the rain came down, so Plan B was put in to action and the group departed for yet more exercise, with a swim in the pool at Northallerton. They finally returned, in good spirits, if a little weary, by the end of the school day.
We look forward to reporting how much money the children have raised in a week or so.
