Prep School Barbarians Rugby

8 February 2010

Congratulations to Robert Brunskill and Charlie Innes who both represented the Northern Prep School Barbarians rugby team against the South at the 'Birthplace of Rugby' on Rugby School's 1st XV pitch last Sunday.

Both the U13 and the U11 games were tough as each player knew they were being watched for their best performance.  Charlie was delighted to be made captain of the U11s and did a good job with that extra responsibility.  Robert had to play so hard that, at one point, he managed not only to knock an opponent senseless, but also himself!  Luckily it was only five minutes before the end of the game.  This must have impressed the selectors in particular as Robert was subsequently picked to join the Prep school Barbarians U13 squad to go on tour to Ireland in the first week of the holidays.

The schools' version of the Barbarians was an initiative set-up by Chris Terry and Roger Uttley of Harrow School. They created a Barbarians match format for those boys playing rugby at Independent Senior Schools. It caters for those individuals that are very good rugby players, but who are not involved in the current RFU representative and Academy structures.

The first game in March 2007 was a great success and an excellent exhibition of Barbarian rugby and its Corinthian values. They then had the idea of organising a similar event for top rugby players at both the Under 11 and Under 13 level to provide an opportunity for all the very best players from across the our region to come together to really test their mettle against each other.

It is very exciting that both Charlie and Robert's skills were recognised at this young age and we look forward to hearing how Robert does in Ireland.
